Africans and in particular African women are coming fast and furious! As the economies of Africa gain momentum globally, African women are stepping out of the shadows to claim their stake of the lion share or the proverbial pie *wink*

Surprisingly though, looking at this list of the richest women in South Africa, only 2 women are billionaires and they are non-Black. We still need to overcome gender & racial inequalities on the continent. What is comforting to know is that plenty of you are in the shadows, working hard on your businesses….in time, in time….

First, happy birthday to the uber fabulous First Lady of America, Mrs. Michelle Obama. She turns 48!

Disclaimer: I am in fact a single, straight, educated black man who has JUST within the last few years matured enough to seriously consider marriage. Now for me its about timing and the right woman.

There is an epidemic in The United States.  A country wide problem that threatens to destroy the very fabric of our union if we don’t get it figured out.  The problem is this; people are not getting married as often as they have in the past.  In fact, many of the people who do get married don’t stay married. The numbers say close to fifty percent of marriages end in divorce.  Selah.

My question is why? Intuitively we know marriage is a good thing.  Couples that marry have children and create families, which make strong communities, cities, states and ultimately a strong vibrant country.  Statistically speaking married people live longer, healthier, happier and wealthier lives.  Marriage is surprisingly beneficial for men.  Married men have sex more often and make up to 40% more than their single peers. Yet our generation seems to be waiting longer to get married and in many cases not at all.

The situation is substantially worse in the black community; black women are two times less likely to marry than any other ethnic group of women.  The numbers for black men are down right scary, almost twenty five percent of us will end up spending time in a jail cell. In all honesty when you look at the statistics, many of the problems within the black community can be traced to the lack of couples that marry and stay together.

But again the real issue is why.  Based on my observation and the input of friends here are six reasons….

As humans, when calendars change we seem to develop an attitude of reflection. Often times this attitude is accompanied by an acknowledgement of lessons that were learned in the past season.  Lessons that become a watery soup of “rules to live by” going into the next.

For me this is true and I wanted to take a few moments to detail six of the lessons that I  learned or was reminded of in 2011….

….and in some very fabulous news, Zimbabwean medical student based in China, Sibo Bero, won the public vote to be crowned Face of Zimbabwe 2012 in a tightly contested Face of Zimbabwe international pageant.

Sibo, who is based in Wuhan, Hubei, China had this to say about her win:

“Your voices were heard and now I stand crowned Face of Zimbabwe 2012. Zimbabwean people have blessed me. I want to thank every single person who wished me well, those that encouraged me, believed in me and especially those that cast their vote.”

Face Of Zimbabwe is an internet-based competition and is organised by KMG Media and sponsored by World Remit. The aim of the pageant is provide an international platform for showcasing Zimbabwe’s beauty, charity and tourism with the prime purpose of marketing Zimbabwe abroad.

Ohleen Munyanyi

UK-based Ohleen Munyanyi was voted the 1st Runner-up. Ohleen also won backing of the other contestants to scoop the “Beauty with a Purpose” prize based on her dedication to Face of Zimbabwe charity work.  The Zimbabwean beauty organized a highly successful talent show at her school to fundraise for children in Zimbabwe.

Thelma Muvirimi

The Face Of Zimbabwe Princess Award went to Thelma Muvirimi, a student based in Durban, South Africa who won the third highest number of votes princess.

It ain’t only Oprah Winfrey who is investing in the African youth (there’s about 400 million below age of 16 not educated properly)….

Enter Fred Swaniker, who believes passionately in educating the youth of African to solve the continent’s problems through The African Leadership Academy. Love the work that Fred and his team are doing…

When Fred was 18-years old, his dad had just died, he was a “head-master” of the school his mom was running in Botswana. That experience gave him the confidence and the practice to launch the The African Leadership Academy when he turned 27-years old.

“You don’t learn leadership through theory. You learn leadership by leading.”

Fred cites great leaders who were influenced by a leadership experience (even if its a small project) during their formative years which prepared them for bigger work like Richard Branson, selling magazines when he was 16-years and that prepared him to build Virgin. Nelson Mandela got involved with the ANC Youth League in his early 20′s and that prepared him to lead the tremendous change in South Africa. Michael Dell started selling computers out of his dorm room when he was 19-years and that prepared him to build Dell. Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook when he was 17-years old out of his Harvard dorm room and…the rest is history.

The African Leadership Academy look for the following qualities in the applicants:
